COURSE TITLE: ACCOUNTING I

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: Recommended for the student with a minimum of a “C” average in a previous math course.  This course is designed for anyone entering the workforce and/or two year college or students entering a four-year college majoring in business.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course emphasizes the basic principles and procedures involved in recording, summarizing and reporting financial records.


 COURSE TITLE: ADMINISTRATIVE PRINCIPLES

PREREQUISITE(S): Completion of Computer Applications, Business Technology Essentials or Integrated Computer Technology with a minimum of a “C” average.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: For students interested in clerical careers.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: This is the “finishing” course that provides students with procedures and skills needed to operate the modern office.   It incorporates office technology with realistic simulations and includes computer software, calculators, dictaphone, payroll, filing, job skills and office simulations.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: If you have taken any agriconstruction courses, you are not eligible to take this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Agriconstruction is a one-credit introductory course designed to facilitate student understanding of construction as it relates to agriculture.  Students become familiar with types of agricultural structures and their uses.   In addition, students are provided opportunities to develop skills in the areas of planning, safety, and construction.  The students will begin with safety and work their way through tool identification, wood identification, and measuring.  These topics will be taught using lecture, writing exercises, peer teaching, and practical exercises.  After these are covered and tested, the students will begin working in the shop and building small projects using information covered in the classroom  This part of the course will be taught using hands-on and one-on-one (teacher/student) instruction.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Agriconstruction Finishing is a one-credit course designed to facilitate student understanding of finishing construction as it relates to agriculture.  Students become familiar with types of agricultural finishing and their applications.  In addition, students are provided opportunities to develop skills in the areas of planning, safety, and finishing for various agricultural structures.  The students will begin with a review of the first course to ensure their knowledge of safety and the identification of woods and tools.


COURSE TITLE: AGRI-CONSTRUCTION-LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a one-credit course that allows students to become more knowledgeable about and appreciative of landscape design and management.  Students receive instruction that allows them to participate in hands-on activities in the areas of careers; safety; landscape drawing and design; landscape plant identification, classification and selection; landscape growth and the environment; landscape establishment and management; landscape tools and equipment; landscape drainage and irrigation; insects, diseases, and weeds; residential turfgrass management; business management; and environmental issues.


COURSE TITLE: AGRI-CONSTRUCTION -SPORTS AND RECREATION TURF

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students enrolled in this one-credit course participate in hands-on activities in the areas of careers; safety; turfgrass identification, classification, and selection; turfgrass growth and the enrvironment, turfgrass establishment, management, renovation, and fertilization; types of sports fields managment; golf course management, pest management; drainage and irrigation; use and maintenance of tools and equipment; and business skills.  Students will participate in hands-on work on golf courses and sports fields.


COURSE TITLE: ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY                  

LENGTH:  ONE TERM (18 weeks)             CREDIT:  1.0

PREREQUISITE(S):  Completion of Biology and Physical Science; concurrently enrolling                                in or having completed Chemistry.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This advanced biology course covers the structure and functions of the systems of the human body with a thorough review of cells, tissues, and organs.  It provides explanations of the complexity of structures as well as the diversity of physical and chemical activity related to the functions of human systems.   Extensive laboratory activities reinforce classroom work.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Integrated Computer Technology utilizes computers as business tools through the use of word processing, presentation, database and spreadsheet software.  It includes analyzing and evaluating situations to complete tasks efficiently and effectively.  Students spend time on each program and integrate the database and/or spreadsheet program with word processing documents.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an introductory applications course that includes keyboarding, computer basics, word processing, database, spreadsheet,and telecommunications.  It also includes a study of the history of computers and the use of computers in society.


COURSE TITLE: COSMETOLOGY - INTRODUCTION

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to cosmetology provides students with a study of personal and professional image, ethical conduct, sanitation, hairstyling, and nail care. Students also gain initial practical experience in sanitation, shampooing, hair shaping,  hairstyling, and nail care.  Introduction to cosmetology is the prerequisite to Chemical Methodology, Colorimetry, and Salon Practices and Management.


COURSE TITLE: COSMETOLOGY - NAIL CARE AND APPLICATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Nail care and artificial nail applications focuses on all aspects of nail care.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to demonstrate professional conduct, recognize nail disorders and diseases, and identify and perform procedures for sanitation and nail care services and artificial nails.  This class also deals with topics like salon conduct, professional ethics, nail structure, manicuring, pedicuring, and  anatomy and physiology of the arm and hand.


COURSE TITLE: COSMETOLOGY- COLORIMETRY (HAIR COLORIING AND  LIGHTENING)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Colorimetry is the study and experience in hair coloring and lightening.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to identify all phases of hair coloring and effects upon the hair as well as perform procedures for hair coloring and lightening.  Problem-solving and thinking skills are essential, and many opportunities are provided for growth in students’ level of competence.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Chemical Methodology focuses on theory of hair and scalp disorders, permanent waving, chemical relaxers, and hair composition.   Students also gain initial practical experience in sanitation, shampooing, hair shaping, and hairstyling.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to practice safety and sanitary precautions as they perform these chemical services.


COURSE TITLE: CREATIVE WRITING

PREREQUISITE(S): Completion of the previous year’s English class with a   “C” average or better.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop confidence in their writing expression.  As a result, they should gain competence in communicating their ideas and feelings in an organized written manner. 


COURSE TITLE: DRAFTING - INTRODUCTION TO DRAFTING DESIGN                                           

LENGTH:  ONE TERM (18 weeks)               CREDIT: 1.0

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: This course is for the student interested in a career in engineering, architecture, or drafting.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Drafting Design is a one-credit course that serves as an introduction to the drafting design technology field.  It provides essential information that builds a strong foundation for the entire program.  Emphasis is placed on student safety, tools and procedures, geometric construction, sketching, dimensioning practices, visualization, and orthographic projection concepts.  Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) functions and techniques using CAD software applications are introduced.   Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to utilize the tools and interpret basic drafting standards to complete a multiview drawing.  This entry-level course may be taken as one of the optional technical courses with credit applied to the industrial Maintenance Technology program.


COURSE TITLE: DRAFTING - INTERMEDIATE MECHANICAL DESIGN

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: This course is for the student interested in engineering, architecture, and drafting related careers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intermediate Mechanical Design is a one-credit course designed to further the development of students’ knowledge regarding the use of drafting design practices and procedures.  Students expand their ability to illustrate more complex objects using the Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) system.  Topics include sectioning, auxiliary views, threads and fasteners, pictorials, and the continuation of conventional dimensioning practices.  Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to develop section views, primary auxiliary views, thread representations and pictorial views; and apply dimensions properly on a drawing.  


COURSE TITLE: DRAFTING -ADVANCED MECHANICAL DESIGN

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Advanced Mechanical Design is a one-credit course for students who are interested in engineering and related mechanical drafting areas that provide more in-depth study of mechanical design.  Emphasis is placed on detailed parts drawings, bill of materials, and assembly drawings.  Students are introduced to basic Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) applications.   Through intersections and development, students acquire basic sheet-metal forming knowledge.  Using this knowledge, students lay out and form models of geometric figures.   Career readiness projects allow students opportunities to research industry standards and practices.


COURSE TITLE: DRAFTING -INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Architectural Design is a one-credit course that introduces students to the basic terminology, concepts, and principles of the architectural design field.  Emphasis is placed on floor plan layout, electrical layout, foundations, typical elevations, and section drawings.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to draw a basic residential architectural construction drawings.


COURSE TITLE:   DRAFTING - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II                  

LENGTH:  ONE TERM (18 weeks)        CREDIT:  1.0

PREREQUISITE(S):  Introduction to Architectural Design

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS:  This course is for the student who desires to pursue a career in engineering,  architecture or drafting fields.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Architectural Design II provides students with instruction regarding more advanced and detailed architectural plans.  Topics include multilevel floor plan layout, building specifications, detailing, plumbing, and electrical plans with basic site plan layout.  Students are encouraged to research and develop a career readiness project with instructor’s approval.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to organize, lay out, and draw more advanced level residential architectural plans.


COURSE TITLE: DRIVER EDUCATION                         

LENGTH:   ONE SEMESTER (9 weeks)    CREDIT: 0.5

PREREQUISITE(S): Students must be 15 years of age.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes classroom activities, simulated driving and at least four hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.  Boating safety is also taught.


COURSE TITLE:   ELECTRONICS- BASIC WIRING

LENGTH:  ONE TERM (18 WEEKS)

PREREQUISITE (S):  Completion of Algebra 1, First Half, or higher math course.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  A scientific calculator and notebook will be needed.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS:  This course addresses a broad range of topics that provide students with a basic understanding of electrical theory and wiring.  The course is also intended for students interested in electronics who want to obtain a basic knowledge of general electronics maintenance, audio installation, avionics, and computer maintenance, repair, and operation.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course emplasizes safety while addressing topics such as shop rules, job opportunities, safety, tools, meters, measuring devices, DC/AC theory, wiring fundamentals and National Electric Code.


COURSE TITLE: ELECTRONICS DC

PREREQUISITE(S): Completion of Algebra 1, First Half, or higher math course.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: This course, along with Electronics AC, is designed to be taken for both terms within the same academic year; however, the option is available to take only the fall term, providing all approvals are met prior to enrollment.  The course is intended for students interested in electronics who want to obtain a basic knowledge of general electronics maintenance, audio installation, avionics, and   computer maintenance, repair, and operation.  

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course involves the student in learning experiences, which include theory in Direct Current and provides students with information regarding basic atomic theory, electronic components, quantities, and measurements.   Instruction and laboratory exercises address characteristics of series, parallel, combination circuits, resistor color codes, Ohm’s law, power, audio installation procedures, and basic avionics installation procedures.


COURSE TITLE: ELECTRONICS AC

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: This course, along with Electronics DC is designed  to be taken for both terms within the same academic year; however, the option is available to take only the fall term, providing all approvals are met prior to enrollment.  This course is designed for students interested in electronics who want to obtain a basic knowledge of general electronics maintenance, audio installation, avionics, and computer maintenance, repair and operation. 

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course involves the student in learning experiences, which include theory in Alternating Current, related wiring/installation procedures, circuit measurements, circuit analysis, reactive circuits, magnetism, power, test equipment and related math skills.


COURSE TITLE: ELECTRONICS -COMPUTER MAINTENANCE

PREREQUISITE:  Completion of or in concurrent with Electronics DC and Electronics AC

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS:  This course is designed as an extension of Electronics I-Part I and II (Electronics DC and AC).  This course is designed for those students interested in pursuing a career in computer related field placing the emphasis on computer hardware.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course provides students with knowledge and skills regarding the maintenance, upgrading, and configuration of PC hardware, components, and peripherals.  Students receive both classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory experiences.  A strong emphasis is placed on proper safety practices and industry ethics.


COURSE TITLE: ELECTRONICS DIGITAL

PREREQUISITE(S): Completion of  Electronics Semiconductors to include teacher’s recommendation.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides the necessary instruction in digital fundamentals and number systems, logic gates, logic devices, circuit construction, microprocessor fundamentals, electronic equipment maintenance and repair, and related math skills..


COURSE TITLE: ELECTRONICS SEMICONDUCTORS

PREREQUISITE(S): Completion of Electronics AC to include teacher recommendation.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides the necessary instruction regarding semiconductor device construction, characteristics of diodes, transistors, circuit configuration, class of operation of amplifiers, and related math skills.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides students with information necessary to make wise decisions about personal and community health.  It includes a lifestyles unit that deals with values assessment, self-esteem, decision making, abstinence, marriage, venereal disease, AIDS, birth control, and other problems facing today’s teenagers. CPR, nutrition, and eating disorders are also covered.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to introduce students to the many job opportunities available in the healthcare field along with a focus on community  healthcare needs.   These courses are each 1/2 credit to combine for 1 full credit at the end of the semester.  Students enrolling in these courses must sign up for both classes.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a one-credit course designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to become competent healthcare workers.   This is a prerequisite course for the clinical internship program.  Job shadowing opportunities will be available to students who are enrolled in this course.


COURSE TITLE: THERAPEUTIC INNOVATIONS/DYNAMICS OF DIAGNOSTICS

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an accelerated program that looks into the daily lives of healthcare workers.  Students who successfully complete this course ill be given 2 credits.  This internship allows you to go into the clinical setting and perform skills under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

Students will be exposed to the different elements, styles, and forms.   The class will also identify and discuss major composers and their works.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a study of  psychological, social, and biological factors that affect human and animal behavior  from conception to death.  Topics covered include psychological theories and theorists, methods of research, sensation and perception, levels of consciousness, learning and memory, intelligence, developmental stages of infancy, childhood, adolescence and adulthood.  Additional areas of concentration cover emotion, personality, gender roles, psychological disorders, treatment, social cognition, and social interaction.

PREREQUISITE(S): For the student with a minimum of a 75 average in English.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: Two credits in a foreign language are required to earn an Alabama High School Diploma with Advanced Endorsement.  When successfully                          completed, this course meets one of these credits.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides an introduction to the Spanish language and culture.  If develops elementary skills in listening, comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.  The language is presented within the context of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world and its culture.

 

*Spanish I will also be offered through the Carroll High School Distance Learning lab through the S.E.A.L. program, Spanish I will be transmitted from the Troy State campus and taught by a certified Spanish teacher.  Students will receive one high school carnegie unit for this class, not college credit.  These classes will be monitored and supervised by the technology facilitator at CHS.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The goals of this course are to learn skills in verbal and nonverbal communication, to assess the audience, to analyze, research and organize information, to recognize propaganda techniques, and to present one’s self confidently before a group.  Units of study will include oral interpretation, interpersonal communication, group discussion, argumentation, debate, and improvised speaking.  General informative, process/demonstration, analytical, persuasive and social cohesion speeches will be presented.


COURSE TITLE: PHYSICS IN CONTEXT (This course will replace Technical Physical Science II as a career/technical elective.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an experiment-based/algebra-based study of applied physics, which involves 40% of class time in laboratory problem-solving situations.  It is designed for the average and above-average student with an interest in technical careers.


COURSE TITLE: TECHNICAL PHYSICAL SCIENCE

PREREQUISITE(S): Promotion from eighth grade

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: For the student with skills in mathematical problem solving who is interested in post-secondary technical or engineering careers.  This     course meets the Physical Science requirement for graduation.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an experiment-based study of the physical science prinicples underlying today’s technology; thirty percent of the total class time is spent  in the laboratory.  Students use the equipment and measurement devices of technicians.
