CHS Course Description - English

COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH NINE-REGULAR (Eng. 9-R)

LENGTH: ONE TERM (18 weeks)                      CREDIT: 1.0

PREREQUISITE(S): Promotion from eighth grade and English teacher recommendation.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION: None

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Students may be required to purchase a vocabulary workbook and/or novels.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: An English credit is required at all grade levels; when successfully completed, this course will meet that requirement. Recommended for the student who may go to college or enter a vocational school or the work force.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on developing a working mastery of basic language competencies, vocabulary, and grade-level writing.  Reading selections from world literature will concentrate on improving comprehension and knowledge of basic literary elements. Practical speaking, viewing, and listening activities will be included throughout the term. This course includes a review of Alabama High School GRAD exam competencies. Students will produce a literature-based project.


COURSE TITLE:   ENGLISH NINE-COLLEGE PREP (Eng. 9-CP)

LENGTH:   ONE TERM  (18 WEEKS) CREDIT:  1.0

PREREQUISITE(S):  Promotion from eighth grade and teacher recommendation.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION:  None

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Students may be required to purchase a vocabulary workbook, writing handbook, and/or novels.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS:  An English credit is required at all grade levels; when successfully completed, this course will meet that requirement.  It is recommended for the student who completed 8th grade English with at least an “A” or “B” average.  English 9CP prepares the college-bound student. 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course includes a survey of world literature and novel reading.  College level grammar, vocabulary, research and grade level composition are taught with an  emphasis on analysis.  This course includes a review of Alabama High School GRAD exam competencies.  Students will produce a literature-based research project.


COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH  NINE-HONORS (Eng.9-H)

LENGTH: one term (18 weeks)              CREDIT: 1.2

PREREQUISITES(S):  Promotion from eighth grade and teacher recommendation.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION: None

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Students may be required to purchase a vocabulary workbook, writing handbook, and/or novels.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: An English credit is required at all grade levels; when successfully completed, this course will meet that requirement.  Designed for highly motivated students who are willing to challenge themselves both in and outside the classroom setting. An “A”  or a “B” average in eighth grade English is recommended.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: An English credit is required at all grade levels; when successfully completed, this course will meet that requirement.  English 10-R is for the student who may go to college, enter a technical school or the work force.  It is recommended for the student who completed ninth grade English with a “C” average or below.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on achieving a mastery of basic language competencies, which include preparation for the graduation exam, grade-level writing, research, and study skills.  American literature –1900 and world literary selections concentrate on improving comprehension. Practical writing, speaking, reading, and listening activities will be included throughout the term.  Students will produce a literature-based research project.


COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH TEN-COLLEGE PREP (Eng. 10-CP)

LENGTH: ONE TERM (18 weeks)         CREDIT: 1.0

PREREQUISITE(S): Teacher recommendation.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION:  None

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Students may be required to purchase a vocabulary workbook, writing handbook, and/or novels. Students need to have access to a college-level dictionary.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: An English credit is required at all grade levels; when successfully completed, this course will meet that requirement.    English 10-CP is recommended for the college-bound student who completed English 9-CP with a minimum of a “B” average.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes a study of advanced grammar, American literature –1900 and world literature selections, and college- preparatory grade-level composition and research. Students will produce a literature-based research project.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: An English credit is required at all grade levels; when successfully completed, this course meets that requirement.  Recommended for the                     highly-motivated college-bound who completed English 9 - Honors or CP. with a minimum of a “B” average.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes a study of selected world and American literature- 1900.  College level grammar, vocabulary, research and grade-level composition are taught with an emphasis on analysis. Students will produce a literature-based research project.


COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH ELEVEN-REGULAR (Eng.11-R)

LENGTH: ONE TERM (18 weeks)      CREDIT: 1.0

PREREQUISITE(S):Teacher recommendation.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: An English credit is required at all grade levels; when successfully completed, this course meets that requirement.  This course is for the student who                 may attend technical school or the work force; It is recommended for students who completed their 10th grade English courses with a “C” average or below. 

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on basic language competencies, which include a review of Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE) competencies, grade-level composition, and research from a topic in American literature or history.  American literature primarily from the 20th century will focus on improving reading, comprehension, and writing skills.  Practical speaking, viewing, and listening activities will be included throughout the term.Students will produce a literature-based research project.


COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH ELEVEN-COLLEGE PREP (Eng. 11-CP)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes a study of advanced grammar, college-preparatory vocabulary, a survey of primarily 20th century American literature, and grade level composition. Practical speaking, viewing, and listening activities will be included throughout the term.   Students will write a literary analysis research project.


COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH ELEVEN-HONORS (Eng. 11-H)

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: An English credit is required at all grade levels;   when successfully completed, this course meets that requirement.  This course is recom mended for the college-bound student who completed English 10-Honors or English Ten-CP with a minimum of a “B” average.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes a survey of primarily 20th century American literature with college- preparatory vocabulary, advanced grammar, grade-level composition, and research involving a topic from 20th century American literature or history.  The course is taught with an emphasis on literary analysis and synthesis.  Speaking, listening, and viewing skills are further developed with an emphasis on analysis.  Students will write a literary analysis research paper.


COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH TWELVE-REGULAR (Eng. 12-R)

LENGTH: ONE TERM (18 weeks)    CREDIT: 1.0

PREREQUISITE(S): Teacher recommendation.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION: None.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Students may be required to purchase a vocabulary workbook  and/or novels.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS:  This course is recommended for the student who may attend college, but who will probably enter a technical school, the military, or the work force; It is recommended for students who completed their 11th grade English course with a “C” average or below.  An English credit is required at all grade levels; when successfully completed, this course meets that requirement.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course concentrates on grade-level writing and literary research with appropriate grammar applying the conventions of standard English. British literature selections also focus on improving reading comprehension and vocabulary.  Practical speaking, viewing, and listening activities will be included throughout the term. Students will produce a research-based literary project.


COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH TWELVE-COLLEGE PREP (Eng. 12-CP)

LENGTH: ONE TERM (18 weeks)               CREDIT: 1.0

PREREQUISITE(S): Teacher  recommendation.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION: None

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Students may be required to purchase a vocabulary handbook, a writing handbook, and/or novels.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: This course is designed for the college-bound student; a grade of “B” in eleventh grade English-CP is recommended.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes a study of advanced grammar, a survey of British literature and college preparatory vocabulary, grade-level composition, and a  research paper involving a literary topic. Speaking, listening, and viewing skills are further developed with an emphasis on analysis.


COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH TWELVE HONORS

LENGTH: ONE TERM (18 WEEKS) CREDIT: 1.0

PREREQUISITE (S): Teacher recommendation

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION: None

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Students may be required to purchase vocabulary workbook, writing handbook, novels.   Students will be encouraged to purchase an AP workbook.

PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: An English credit is required at all grade levels;when successfully completed, this course meets that requirement. This course is intended for the college-bound student who completed English 11- Honors with a minimum of a “B” average.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes a survey of British literature.  It includes college-preparatory vocabulary and grammar.  Grade-level composition emphasizes analysis and synthesis; students will write a literary analysis research paper. Speaking, listening, and viewing are taught with an emphasis on analysis. The student who has completed this course or who is currently enrolled is eligible to take the AP exam.
