Letter from Principal

Lisenby Elementary School, an established school built in 1966, has a long history of delivering quality instruction to students in the Ozark City School System. Our teachers use strategies that are research based. This is the fifth year our school has been designated an Alabama Reading Initiative school, a program emphasizing the importance of every child reading at their highest potential.

Lisenby Elementary School has an established and experienced staff. Every teacher and every aide is rated highly qualified by state standards. In addition to grades first through fifth, Lisenby School now offers a new preschool program that began in December 2008.

Lisenby Elementary met all of the goals to achieve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), the standard set for schools by the No Child Left Behind Act. In 2008, Lisenby School received recognition from the Alabama Department of Education School Rewards in three areas. The first area was “Advancing the Challenge” in reading and math by exceeding the state percent for scoring advanced. Secondly, we received recognition for “Addressing the Challenge” with a subgroup of our students closing the achievement gap in reading and math by scoring 15% higher than a comparable state subgroup. Lisenby School was recognized for “Meeting the Challenge” because our school met AYP with 18 out of 18 proficiency goals in reading and math. In addition, Lisenby Elementary School achieved recognition as an Accelerated Reading Model School and Master School during the 2009-2010 school year.

Test scores and other valuable information may be accessed at the state web site, www.alsde.edu. Other information may be located at the Ozark City Schools web site, www.ozarkcityschools.net.

Lisenby Elementary has an active PTO that provides valuable services to our school. Some of their recent projects include helping with the our AR celebrations, remembering teachers during American Education Week, working at Lisenby School during Make a Difference Day, providing playground maintenance and equipment, helping with the blood drive, and providing new blinds for our cafeteria.

The faculty and staff are committed to continuing a tradition of academic excellence and success. Lisenby provides a safe and orderly learning environment that allows students to thrive both socially and intellectually. At Lisenby Elementary School, the faculty and staff are dedicated to making the student’s elementary experiences exciting, challenging, productive, safe, and memorable.

Sincerely,
Jaann Wells, Principal
